Security

Recent and serious security incidents have prompted new initiatives at international, national and company level, which would reflect the new realities. Ports could be targets or could be used for a range of unlawful acts such as the illegal transit of weapons, radioactive materials, drugs etc. Ports should be ready to safeguard the national security of the country they belong to but also to contribute to the collective international efforts to detect and deter any security threats for a safer international trade. The ILO is in a position to provide technical assistance to interested ports to implement the security policies and measures included in the ILO/IMO Code of Practice on Security in Ports (2004), which has been jointly developed by the ILO & IMO in order to complement the IMO's ISPS Code, which contains requirements that relate only to security of the ship and the immediate ship/port interface (i.e. the port facility).

The ILO/IMO Code of Practice on Security in Ports (2004) extends the consideration of port security beyond the area of port facility into the whole port. The ILO in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and ST. Education & Training of Singapore has recently developed training material for courses on the implementation of the ILO/IMO Code of Practice on Security in Ports (2004) and the ILO would be willing to offer such courses to interested ports.
