Fishing: Social protection

Social security

ILO’s strategic objective: Enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all

Since its creation in 1919, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has actively promoted policies and provided assistance to countries to supply adequate levels of social protection to all members of society. The ILO's Social Security Department provides policy advice, undertakes research and carries out technical cooperation activities in this area.

Social security and fishers

The Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188) and the Work in Fishing Recommendation, 2007 (No. 199) contain specific provisions concerned with social security of fishers. In particular, see, in the Convention, Articles 34 to 37 (Social Security) as well as Articles 38 and 39 (Protection in the Case of Work-related Sickness, Injury or Death). In the Recommendation, see paragraphs 50 to 52.
