First international conference on workplace violence in the health sector
Amsterdam, 22-24 October 2008

ILO supports the first international conference on workplace violence in the health sector, to be held in Amsterdam, 22-24 October 2008. The conference focuses on the problem of violence against health workers and aims to promote effective policies and strategies to create safe work environments.

First Global Forum on Human Resources for Health

The first Global Forum on Human Resources for Health was held in Kampala, Uganda from 2-7 March 2008, under the auspices of the Global Health Workforce Alliance, of which ILO is a member.

Close to 1500 participants attended the Forum, including health workers' representatives, experts and ministers of health, education and finance, and donors. Forum participants endorsed the Kampala Declaration and the Agenda for Global Action as guiding documents for initial steps in a coordinated global, regional and national response to the worldwide shortage and misdistribution of health workers.

New ratification of the Nursing Personnel Convention, 1977 (No. 149)

The Nursing Personnel Convention, 1977 (No. 149) has been ratified by Lithuania, as announced at the 96th session of the International Labour Conference in June 2007. It will enter into force for Lithuania on 12 June 2008.

The Convention and the accompanying Nursing Personnel Recommendation, 1977 (No. 157) are intended to strengthen the rights of nursing personnel and to guide policy makers, workers’ and employers’ representatives in planning and implementing nursing policies within the framework of a given country’s overall health policy.

The promotional brochure ILO Nursing Personnel Convention No. 149: recognize their contribution, address their needs provides information on both instruments. It is also available in French, Spanish and Russian.
