Training
Major breakthroughs in processing, packaging, control, waste management technology are a daily occurrence. Although many international organizations and companies pool and disseminate information about availability and cost of technology and technology transfers, it is important to ensure that workers at the receiving end are properly trained in the handling of new plants and processes. Training programmes need to be conducted by the social partners to ensure a high level of awareness with regard to production techniques, food safety laws and policies.
From specialist roles, including technologists and new product development managers introducing innovative ideas, to production management and packaging roles, more jobs are expected to be available in the future in areas such as engineering, quality control, human resources, marketing, sales and finance. At present, even in industrialized countries, the sector continues to suffer from a mismatch between the jobs needed and training opportunities in a complex mix of specializations, notably nutrition, statistics, forecasts, patents, legislation and logistics, not to mention food safety controls and labour inspection. The supply chain in the food and drink sector, through procurement of goods to product distribution, will continue to offer opportunities for positions in the areas of procurement, information technology, expertise, sales, operations and logistics.
