Preface

This publication is the outcome of research prepared as a follow-up to the last tripartite meeting for the rural sector -- Tripartite Meeting on Conditions of Employment and Work in the Rural Sector, 1996. Requests were made, among others, to conduct research on the impact of globalization on agricultural workers and on diversification of the export base. The study is part of a global project on flower-growing. Other studies will include flower-growing in Colombia, Ecuador, Kenya and Zimbabwe. The synthesized results of the studies will be published in 1998 and used in preparing the documentation for the next tripartite meeting for the rural sector. It is hoped that this and other studies to follow will provide useful information on a dynamic subsector of agricultural activities.

B. Klerck Nilssen,
Officer in Charge,
Industrial Activities Branch.
