InFocus Initiative on Export processing zones

Export processing zones

This InFocus Initiative was responsible in the ILO, during the biennium 2006-2007, for the coordination of the activities of the various units of the Office in the field of Export Pocessing Zones. As an important feature of globalization, the ILO has monitored EPZs for over 20 years. They are a key feature of the emerging global economy, and the locus of both problems and opportunities for achieving decent work goals.

Guided by the relevant Governing Body discussions, this Initiative drew on work in different parts of the Office focused on specific economic sectors.

Under the responsibility of Sector IV the aim was to develop advisory services to governments and others that foster an upgrading of the quality of both employment and production in EPZs and their integration into broader national and international development strategies.
