Project Background: |
What the world of work will look like in the 21st century depends to a great extent on the responses trade unions will be in a position to find to such fundamental issues as the liberalization of capital markets; the economic integration agreements; the introduction of new technologies; the informal sector and non-traditional forms of employment (part-time, homework, contract labour and teleworking).
The ILO has made an important contribution towards the development of a growing awareness that issues of social policy can both affect and be affected by international trade and investment flows and that the most suitable way to deal with increased international competition is not lowering labour standards, but enhancing labour productivity through investments in skill development. In this connection, information and education are key factors to master development processes and to put the workers in a position to protect and promote their rights. The ILO, as well as other institutions, has been undertaking a number of educational programmes on basic economic concepts. However, there have been so far insufficient resources to ensure that a permanent and rigorous economic capacity was created within national trade union centres and NGOs closely related to them. This project, funded by Italy, is aiming at improving the skills of trade unions and trade union related NGOs in the application of information technology, which is opening up new avenues and suggesting new and cost-effective possibilities for the development of workers' education. While the teaching aids and other educational materials produced under the project will be at the disposal of a wider audience, activities are specially designed for developing countries, as a contribution to avoid that the world be divided into "haves" and "have nots" also in this strategic field.
