TRADE UNIONS SET UP WSSD HEADQUARTERS & ANNOUNCE PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME FOR WORKERS' SUMMIT IN JOHANNESBURG
Tuesday, 3 July, 2002
Trade Unions will take over the 350-room Pereton Hotel as its headquarters for the WSSD, just 15 minutes from the Summit's transportation hub at the UBUNTU Village, in Johannesburg.
The Chairman of the
ICFTU/TUAC Working Party on Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE), Mr. Marion Hellmann, who is the Assistant General Secretary of the International Federation of Building and Woodworkers (
IFBWW), made the announcement today, while releasing plans to kick of their trade union Summit for Sunday, 25 August at the Pereton Hotel, under the banner of
"FASHIONING A NEW DEAL: ASSESSING OUR PROGRESS" (background document).
A week-long series of trade union meetings will cover sustainable development issues as they relate to work, workers and workplaces (
see Annex) and will be made to feed into activities that are contemplated at the official UN meetings as well as those planned for by Civil Society at the NASREC Centre and by Governments and other stakeholders at the UBUNTU Village. Hellmann said that the trade unions plan to host and be part of quite a number of meetings at the Summit, especially those that relate to integrating the social pillar of sustainable development.
"We aim to strengthen the social and employment provisions of the eventual WSSD texts and to improve provisions for worker participation, corporate accountability, roles of governments, and sector linkages to production/consumption patterns so as to pave the way for realistic and effective workplace-based partnerships, for the next decade", he said
Hellmann said their own meetings would serve as the basis of organizing their input, in collaboration with other Major Groups at the WSSD and he expects a series of discussions with them prior to the opening of the summit to clarify possible joint approaches.
