Ibrahim Mayaki, 15 février 1954 - 31 mars 2008

Né à Keita (Niger) le 15 février 1954, Ibrahim Mayaki entre au BIT en septembre 1998 en tant que Spécialiste en matière d'activités pour les travailleurs au Bureau régional de l'OIT pour l'Afrique à Abidjan. Son parcours syndical lui permet, pendant toute sa carrière au BIT, de traduire les valeurs et principes de l'OIT en actions concrètes qui contribuent à améliorer les conditions de vie et de travail de beaucoup des travailleurs et travailleuses.

De 1993 à 1998, Ibrahim a été membre du Conseil d'administration du BIT et porte-parole du groupe des travailleurs pour la Commission de la coopération technique.

Avant de rejoindre le BIT, Ibrahim avait derrière lui une longue carrière syndicale:

• De 1992 à 1998, il a été Secrétaire général de l'Union des Syndicats des Travailleurs du Niger;
• De 1985 à 1995, il a été Secrétaire général du Syndicat National des Enseignants du Niger.
  

Ibrahim a étudié à l'Université de Niamey au Niger avant de rejoindre, en 1977, le Ministère de l'Education nationale comme conseiller pédagogique 1er cycle du secondaire en mathématiques.

En tant que membre du Syndicat du personnel du BIT, Ibrahim a présidé la Deuxième session de l'Assemblée générale du Syndicat à Genève en octobre 2007. Il a été président du Syndicat au Bureau d'Addis Abeba.

Ibrahim a mené ses premières batailles syndicales au Niger et en Afrique. Son dernier combat, il l'a livré contre la maladie qui s'était manifestée dès 2006. En décembre 2007, malgré la détérioration de sa santé, il a trouvé le courage et la force d'effectuer un Pèlerinage à La Mecque. Ibrahim laisse sa femme, Fatimata, et sept enfants: Fanta, Assamaou, Moctar, Aboubacar, Aghali, Mohamed et Ramatou. Nos pensées vont vers eux en ce jour.

Que l'âme de notre frère Ibrahim repose en paix.

Ibrahim Mayaki was born in Keita, Niger, on 15 February 1954 and joined the ILO in September 1998 as a Specialist in Workers' Activities with ACTRAV in the Regional Office in Abidjan. Ibrahim's trade union background was instrumental in translating the ILO's values and principles into concrete actions that contributed to improving working and living conditions for many workers during his 10 years' service with the ILO.

Ibrahim was a member of the Governing Body from 1993 to 1998 and spokesman for the Workers' Group on Technical Cooperation during this period.

Prior to joining the ILO, Ibrahim's trade union career included:

• General Secretary of the USTN (Union des Syndicats des Travailleurs du Niger) from 1992 to 1998 and
• From 1985 to 1995, General Secretary of the SNEN (Syndicat National des Enseignants du Niger).
  

Ibrahim studied at the University of Niamey in Niger and joined the Ministry of Education as a mathematics teacher in 1977.

As a member of the Staff Union Ibrahim chaired the Second Session of the Staff Union's Annual General Meeting in Geneva in October 2007. He was an elected Staff Union official at the Addis Ababa office.

Ibrahim fought his first battle long and hard on behalf of the workers of Niger and Africa, and his second against the illness which first attacked him in late 2006. In December 2007 despite being terribly weak, he managed to travel to Mecca and perform the Hajj. Ibrahim is survived by his wife, Fatimata, and seven children: Fanta, Assamaou, Moctar, Aboubacar, Aghali, Mohamed, and Ramatou, and our thoughts are with them today.
