Satellite Meeting "Expanding the Response to HIV/AIDS:
Addressing the Epiemic through the Workplace"
(ILO/AIDS)

BACKGROUND
The International Labour Organization (ILO), recognizing the growing impact of HIV/AIDS on the world of work, has created a global Programme on HIV/AIDS and the world of work (ILO/AIDS) and launched the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the world of work at the UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS in June 2001.

The main objective of the programme is to strengthen the capacity of the social partners in member States to formulate and effectively implement appropriate policies, programmes and activities at national and enterprise levels.

The global response to HIV/AIDS has evolved along with the epidemic from being crisis-driven to emphasising capacity enhancement and sustaining a multisectoral response. In this context, and as part of the implementation of the code of practice, this satellite workshop is organised to examine the role of the world of work in HIV/AIDS control and impact mitigation and to identify effective approaches for the implementation of the code at national level.

THE WORKSHOP
The theme of the satellite workshop is: "EXPANDING THE RESPONSE TO HIV/AIDS: ADDRESSING THE PIDEMICTHROUGH THE WORKPLACE " and the sub-themes are as follows:

  • Impact of HIV/AIDS on the world of work;
  • Implementing the ILO code of practice: the role of governments and
