Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCC)
Social Dialogue and Youth Employment Project

There is currently a gap in Nepal between the 300, 000 new entrants to the job market each year and available employment opportunities. Research indicates that part of the problem is that 20% of unemployed youths possess the ability to become entrepreneurs, yet only 5% are able to capitalize on their potential. The ILO-ACT/EMP Social Dialogue and Youth Employment project aims to promote youth employment in partnership with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCC) by:

  • Increasing and strengthening the provision of employment services for youth in a changed globalized employment environment.
  • Promoting Social Dialogue by improving the relations between workers/trade unions, employers and the government for decent employment.
  • Promoting youth entrepreneurship to create more jobs for youth and exploring business/employment opportunities and making them competitive in the global market.
  • Empowering the employers' organization through training and capacity building, involving them also in research/studies.
  • Promoting ILO's global objectives in regard to strengthening tripartism and social dialogue and promoting public-private partnership.

The planned and ongoing activities of the Social Dialogue and Youth Employment project include:

  • Increasing provision of employment services for youth seeking employment
  • Developing a youth skills database linked to the FNCCI website so that FNCCI member-enterprises seeking skilled youth can access it.
  • Promoting social dialogue developing systems/mechanisms in 40 enterprises for dispute settlement and sound workplace environment.
  • Conducting workshops in phases for management and trade union personnel in Biratnagar, Hetauda/Birgunj, Pokhara and Kathmandu.
  • Publishing and release of booklets and posters on Workplace Industrial Relation and Social Dialogue.
  • Conducting Training of Trainers for trade school instructors on new modules.
  • Disseminating information through FM Radio on loans and mentoring programmes to motivate potential youth entrepreneurs for entrepreneurship development.
