International Symposium on Business Responses to the Demographic Challenge
The ageing workforce is one of the greatest challenges in the contemporary world, with long term implications. Dependency ratios in both developed and developing countries have risen, and established systems for looking after older persons are under stress everywhere. Shrinking workforces have also changed the skills maps, affecting investment opportunities and consequently the options for wealth generation in many societies. Already, many concerned companies have begun to look for solutions, mostly by encouraging older workers to stay in the labour market. However, that has not been easy for many reasons, including institutional barriers and behavioural factors. Yet it is important to find sustainable solutions very soon, before the challenge becomes a crisis.
The ILO Bureau for Employers' Activities organized an employers' symposium for business to discuss solutions to these issues. It was held on 28 and 29 April 2009 at the ILO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and brought together leading thinkers from the business community, researchers and companies. The issues were looked at from all perspectives, with a view to understanding them better, reviewing experiences in addressing them at the enterprise and societal levels, and looking for ways in which business can better address the problem.
