Strategies and Tools against social Exclusion and Poverty (STEP)

    Throughout the world, many experiences based on grassroots initiatives carried out by community organizations show significant results in terms of poverty alleviation and the reduction of social exclusion. These schemes are generally carried out by organizations set up as associations, cooperatives or mutual societies. The STEP strategy is based on acknowledgement and effective use of the know-how built up by these organizations. To this end, STEP:

    • identifies the most significant concrete experiences of these groups;
    • analyzes and evaluates these experiences, to extract the main methodological lessons; and, finally,
    • ensures the dissemination and adaptation of these methodologies by various means: production of publications and teaching materials, training and experience-sharing activities, implementation of projects and programmes, and support for reform of policies and legislation affecting the social economy sector.
