The fight against poverty and for social justice lies at the heart of all the ILO's concerns. Indeed, high quality employment is the most effective means to reduce poverty in a sustainable manner. The task for the international community, as set out more than fifty years ago by the Philadelphia Convention, was to carry on the "war against want", both within nations and by concerted international effort. This site describes the actions undertaken by the ILO to combat poverty, in concert with other United Nation bodies.
