REPORT OF THE AMSTERDAM CHILD LABOUR CONFERENCE
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 26-27 February 1997

The Preface is available here and the entire document can be downloaded as a pdf file with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Preface
The Amsterdam Child Labour Conference brought together in a representative way all actors involved in the struggle to eradicate child labour. During these two days, we learnt from each other's experiences and we had an open exchange of views. I found this a very rewarding experience.

The Amsterdam Conclusions have been subscribed by the conference as a whole. All participants were unanimous in their condemnation of the exploitation of children. Child labour is a universal problem demanding solidarity on a global scale. The Conference expressed its true commitment to the challenge of eradicating child exploitation as a matter of paramount urgency.

However, we must not be complacent. A lot of work is yet to be done. Our next step will be the introduction and strengthening of new ILO instruments on child labour. I hope we will continue working together constructively, so that we can at least make a start in eradicating the most intolerable forms of child labour. I am confident that we will make progress in making all children share equally in education, health and a fair chance in life.
