The project aims to improve access to information about the ILO's work through a variety of means.
Communication materials
These will include a special issue of the ILO’s “World of work” magazine; an illustrated chronology of the ILO, showing the linkage with major labour and social events and developments in world history; and a virtual exhibition on work-related themes. Longer term projects include a television documentary on ILO history, drawing on audiovisual archives and oral history.
Educational materials
Pedagogical materials will be prepared in the course of the project. These may include: (i) an historical introduction to the ILO, its goals and methods, for new ILO officials, UN staff, and ILO constituents participating in the International Labour Conference and Governing Body; (ii) teaching materials for schools and universities, to be developed in cooperation with constituents in selected countries.
Translations
A list of key historical ILO documents and publications will be also drawn up for translation into other major languages, notably French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Arabic, where these language versions do not exist. Some texts will also be made available in other important languages.
A historical exhibition
A permanent exhibition on the history of labour and tripartism over the last century, with a particular focus on the action of the ILO is under consideration. Located in Geneva, the permanent collection would take advantage of new technologies and be combined with temporary exhibitions, workshops and lectures. It would also serve as an introduction to the ILO and its work.
