ILO Library

It has always been recognized that the International Labour Organization is a knowledge-based organization and that collecting and disseminating information is one of its key functions. From the ILO’s beginnings this role was expressly set out by the Treaty of Versailles in Article 396 which stipulated that one of its functions was to centralize and distribute information on the conditions of workers and the development of labour laws. This role was subsequently reaffirmed in Article 10 of the ILO Constitution which states that one of the functions of the International Labour Office is the “collection and distribution of information on all subjects relating to the international adjustment of conditions of industrial life and labour”.

Since the ILO's foundation in 1919, the ILO Library has contributed to this function in two ways. First, it is the institutional repository of all ILO publications, in both print and electronic formats, which are produced in Geneva and in the ILO’s offices around the world. Second, it seeks out, collects, organizes and preserves information materials on all subjects related to the world of work including sustainable livelihoods and the work-related aspects of economic and social development, technological change and human rights.
