An integrated system of wages' statistics: A manual on methods
Statistics of wages and hours of work are essential in evaluating living standards and conditions of work, and in recent years a growing need has been felt for more complete and reliable data in this field. In 1973 the 12th International Conference of Labour Statisticians adopted a resolution concerning an integrated system of wages statistics, embodying the principal international recommendations on the subject. This system comprises current and non-current wages' statistics' programmes covering the non-agricultural and agricultural sectors.
The manual discusses the principal uses of wages' statistics together with the related concepts and definitions, and outlines the integrated system recommended. Five chapters are devoted to providing the practical guidance needed for conducting wage surveys meeting the requirements of the various programmes. Illustrative survey questionnaires for the collection of data on wage rates, earnings, labour cost and wage structure and distribution as well as many model tables are included. the methodology proposed is based on extensive research on the practices followed by the different countries. The two final chapters deal with wage indices and their computation and with statistics of real wages.
