MINOR GROUP 612: MARKET-ORIENTED ANIMAL PRODUCERS AND RELATED WORKERS
 


    Market-oriented animal producers and related workers plan and carry out the necessary operations to breed, raise and tend livestock such as cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses or other animals, including birds, reptiles, fur-producing animals, poultry, game, and to produce a variety of animal husbandry products, for sale or delivery on a regular basis to wholesale buyers, marketing organisations or at markets.

    Tasks performed usually include: determining kinds and amounts of livestock, poultry, game, birds, reptiles, bees, silkworms and other animals to be raised; purchasing animals, producing and purchasing fodder and other supplies; renting or investing in grazing land and land improvements, buildings, machinery, livestock and other animals; performing farm operations such as breeding and raising livestock, poultry, etc., and producing various animal husbandry products; storing and carrying out some basic processing of their produce; maintaining farm buildings, machinery and equipment; delivering or marketing farm products. Supervision of other workers may be included.

    Occupations in this minor group are classified into the following unit groups:

    6121 Dairy and livestock producers

    6122 Poultry producers

    6123 Apiarists and sericulturists

    6124 Mixed-animal producers

    6129 Market-oriented animal producers and related workers not elsewhere classified

    Note Workers in animal production and breeding with mainly managerial tasks should be classified into one of the following unit groups: 1 21 0, Directors and chief executives, 1221, Production and operations department managers In agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing, or 131 1, General managers in agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing. Workers who mainly operate agricultural and forestry machinery should be classified into Minor group 833, Agricultural and other mobile plant operators. Workers with simple and routine tasks - such as helpers and labourers - which mainly entail the use of hand-held tools and some physical effort, and which require little or no previous experience and understanding of the work and only limited initiative or judgement, should be classified into Minor group 921, Agricultural fishery and related labourers.
