This publication consists of six volumes. The first four volumes, each on a major area, or group of major areas, present data by country and/or territory on the economically active population by sex and age group and its effective and forecast trend between 1950 and 2010. These volumes also present data on the distribution of the economically active population by sex and sector of economic activity between 1950 and 1990. Volume V (World: Summary) covers the regions, major areas and the world. Volume VI (Methodological Supplement), French only, gives a detailed description of the methods used to produce these estimates and projects. A trilingual version (English, French and Spanish) of this Volume VI exists as Volume 10, Sources and Methods: Labour Statistics and ( Volumes 1 to 5 are free-of-charge.
This publication is part of the programme launched in 1971 by the International labour Office in order to provide member States, the international agencies concerned, experts and users in general with a working tool that is comprehensive, detailed and, most importantly, comparable in space (across countries and/or territories) and in time (from one date to another in the same country and/or territory). It is also part of the joint programme of the United Nations and the specialized agencies - in particular the ILO, the FAO and UNESCO - aimed at providing demographic data on population, economically active population, economically active population in agriculture, school population, natality , mortality and fertility rates, etc., that are coordinated and comparable in terms of dates, sources, criteria for the treatment of statistics and estimation and projection methods.
With this in mind, the estimates and projections of the economically active population contained in the first five volumes of this publication were obtained by applying to the population estimates and projections assessed by the United Nations in 1996, the corresponding estimates and projections of activity rates by sex and age group in the middle of each of the reference years selected for the period 1950-2010, established in the ILO in 1996.
This database contains estimates and projections of the total population, the activity rates and the economically active population (labour force) by sex and five-year age groups (from 10 to 64 years and 65 years and over) for the period 1950-2010 at ten-year intervals plus 1995, and estimates of the distribution of the labour force by sex and major sectors of economic activity, i.e. agriculture, industry and services, for the period 1950-1990. Separate results are also presented for manufacturing for the years 1980 and 1990. The data cover all countries and territories of the world which had at least 200,000 inhabitants in 1990 (178 countries and territories), plus their aggregations into regions, major areas and the world, for a total of 207 geographical units.
The activity rates are derived by estimating and adjusting national statistics reported to the ILO; their projections are based on trends in activity rates by sex and age group observed in the countries and territories over the entire reference period or over part of it. The population estimates and projections were provided by the United Nations Population Division ("World Population Prospects 1950-2050: The 1996 Revision").
The Economically active population, 1950-2010 was completed in December 1996 and corresponds to the fourth round of the ILO programme on estimates and projections of the economically active population; previous editions were published in 1971, 1977 and 1986.
The data are presented on 2 diskettes IBM-PC compatible which can be read by computers with a 286 processor or higher containing a floppy disk of 3"1/2 high density and 3 Mb hard disk free. The user can readily import the files into standard software processing packages.
The CD-ROM contains data on estimates and projections of the total population, the activity rates and the economically active population (labour force) by sex and age group for the period 1950-2010 and the labour force by sex and major economic sectors, i.e. agriculture, industry and services, for the period 1950-1990. Separate results are also presented for manufacturing for the years 1980 and 1990.
The figures on the CD-ROM update those issued in ILO, Economically Active Population, 1950-2010 (fourth edition, STAT Working Papers Nos. 1996-1, 1996-2, 1996-3, 1996-4 and 1996-5) on the basis of the population estimates and projections (medium variant) provided by the United Nations Population Division: " World Population Prospects 1950-2050: The 1998 Revision". The labour force participation rates have not been modified in this revision (Rev. 1).
The CD-ROM contains four files. The files are ASCII text files (*.DAT). The user can readily import them into
software processing packages such as EXCEL, LOTUS 123, SAS-PC and SPSS-PC.
