This group includes major occupational groups and generic job families concerned with the theoretical or practical aspects of fields such as finance and accounts, law, education, social science, economics, business and administrative, managerial and other technical specializations. Most of these generic job families require substantial academic preparation, normally at the advanced university level.

Two major occupational groups have been identified in the professional category in the ILO; namely Management & Administrative Work and Technical Work.

General Services category (Grades G.1 to G.7)

This group includes major occupational groups and generic job families concerned with recording, compiling, reviewing and processing data; with providing information, transmitting correspondence and messages, and coordinating meetings and conferences; and with carrying out other duties in accordance with established practices and procedures in support of occupations responsible for the management, creation, analysis and presentation of plans and programmes. These generic job families may also be involved with the performance of technical support work in a specific subject area where practical application (rather than theoretical knowledge) is required. Three major occupational groups have been identified in the general service category in the ILO; namely Administration Related Support Work, Technical Support Work, and Manual Trades and Other Support Work.
