Employment conditions

Additional information:   Conditions of employment in the ILO conform to those established by the International Civil Service Commission for employment in the United Nations and specialized agencies. Benefits generally include:

Annual Leave:

ILO officials are entitled to 30 working days (six weeks) of paid leave per year (at the rate of 2.5 days per month). Leave may be accumulated at the rate of 15 days per year up to a maximum of 60 days.

Home Leave:

Every two years the ILO pays the travel costs of an official's holiday in his/her country of origin. The travel costs of the official's recognized dependants are also covered.

Pension scheme:

All ILO officials contribute to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund. The official's contribution amounts to 7.9% of the pensionable remuneration (which varies according to the official's grade and step). The Office's contribution is double that of the official, ie. 15.8%.

Health Insurance:

All ILO officials contribute to the ILO/ITU Staff Health Insurance Fund at the rate of 2.9% of all income. Members benefit from world-wide medical coverage for 80% of all costs. Coverage extends to all of the official's recognized dependants.

Education Grant & Scholastic Travel:

The education grant is designed to cover part of the additional cost of educating children, arising from the fact of an official's expatriation. The grant pays 75% of the cost for attendance up to a maximum which varies according to the currency in which expenditures are incurred and which is subject to regular review. Additionally, the ILO pays a flat rate for a child in a free school or boarding, if away from the duty station. The grant is payable from primary level up to the fourth year of post-secondary studies OR the award of the first recognized degree OR the end of the school year in which the child reaches the age of 25 - whichever comes first.

The ILO also pays for one outward and return journey from the educational institution to the duty station per child per year.

Only children for whom the official provides the main and continuing support and who are in full-time attendance at an educational institution may qualify for the grant.

Child Allowance:

On top of the Education Grant, officials also receive an additional annual allowance per dependant child.

Rental subsidy:

Officials may receive a rental subsidy which is designed to offset costs for accommodation of a resonable standard for which the rent may be higher than the average for the duty station.
