Kuwait gives US$ 1,000,000 to the ILO in support of its work to promote decent work in Arab States

GENEVA, 3 December 2009 - The Government of Kuwait today contributed US$ 1,000,000 to the ILO’s Regular Budget Supplementary Account (RBSA), becoming the first donor country from the Arab region to contribute to the RBSA.

The RBSA is an innovative funding mechanism providing additional support in a more flexible and predictable way. This allows the ILO and its constituents to promote decent work for more women and men.

The ILO has encouraged Member States to make additional voluntary contributions through the ILO’s RBSA, since it allows the ILO to respond quickly and efficiently to emerging needs, especially during the global economic crisis, which is affecting businesses, employers, workers, their families and communities everywhere.

“We very much welcome this contribution from the Government of Kuwait, which represents their commitment to the Decent Work Agenda. Their continuing support to the challenges of the region is invaluable and allows us to tackle the priorities in the Arab States while working at the country level – specific examples include enhanced training in Kuwait on international labour standards”, said Ms. Nada Al-Nashif, the ILO’s Regional Director for Arab States.

His Excellency Ambassador Dharar Abdul-Razzak Razzooqi, Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva, said: "We are very pleased to expand our collaboration with the ILO. We have long supported the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda and are particularly impressed with the ILO’s programmes on capacity building and legislative support, as well as the Palestinian programme of technical cooperation.”
