Facts and figures: Trends in ILO extra-budgetary technical cooperation

The year 2008 saw a new record for the level of resources approved for ILO projects – around $302 million. Partly owing to the effects of the international financial crisis, this will not be matched in 2009, but the overall figure for the biennium is nevertheless likely to exceed $500 million. Comparisons with previous biennia show a continuing upward trend (2006-07: $467 million; 2004-05: $328 million).

Increasing extrabudgetary funds and expenditure reflect donors' growing confidence in the ILO’s capacity to provide valuable technical assistance to support constituents' effort to implement the Decent Work Agenda, at both the global and local levels. Funds mobilized locally continue to play an important role in the overall portfolio.

In 2008 the ILO implemented US$185 million worth of technical cooperation projects and programmes in nearly 100 countries worldwide, including work on combating child labour, creating employment and livelihoods, and developing policies on occupational safety and health. In 2008 and 2009 the ILO continued to expand its technical cooperation in Africa not only through extrabudgetary funding, but also with additional resources from the Regular Budget Supplementary Account (RBSA).
