The International Institute for Labour Studies (IILS) was established by the International Labour Organization in 1960 as a centre for advanced studies in the social and labour field to further a better understanding of labour issues through education and research. It uses research networks, social policy forums, educational activities and publications to open up new perspectives for social policy; develop systematic exchanges between the ILO’s constituents and the external academic communities and practitioners; and familiarize future social policy-makers with the processes of tripartite consultations and policy formulation.

The International Labour Review, the ILO's flagship journal since 1921, has been reorganized. The ILR is now associated with the ILO's International Institute for Labour Studies (IILS), whose Director chairs the Editorial Board. The editorial policy of the ILR will be independent, but it will benefit from exchange with the research environment provided by the IILS. As a global multidisciplinary journal of labour and social policies and relationships, published in English, French and Spanish, with a worldwide readership, the ILR aims to become the obvious first choice for publication of high-quality research by all those concerned with labour and employment.
