Visiting Scholar Programme
The Institute's Visiting Scholar Programme offers an opportunity for academics with a specialization in labour and social policy to use Institute facilities, office space and access to ILO documentation services. The programme is expected to foster interaction between ILO staff and the academic community and to encourage research and exchange of information on priorities and concerns of the ILO. Visiting scholars are invited to give staff seminars on their research work and to participate as teaching staff in educational activities. Visiting scholars may also be invited with a mandate to prepare special papers or teaching materials for the research and education programmes of the Institute.
The following conditions govern the acceptance of visiting scholars:
- The visiting scholar must work on an area of concern to the Institute and to the ILO, ensure the Institute's ability to direct the scholar towards appropriate sources of information and act as a sounding board for the work being undertaken. In addition, scholars usually contribute to the work of the Institute by participating in appropriate meetings and seminars.
- The sole responsibility for the work done or published during the stay at the Institute rests with the visiting scholar. The offer of visiting facilities does not imply any endorsement of such work by the Institute or the ILO.
- In general, there is no provision for financial support for visiting scholars and neither the Institute nor the ILO can accept responsibility for any expenses incurred in connection with their stay. Visiting scholars must make their own arrangements with regard to travel and living costs and must take out the necessary health or accident insurance
- However, some funds will be available to defray the travel and subsistence expenses of a number of visiting scholars from institutions in developing countries. Application for such funds should be addressed to the Director of the Institute. Some visiting scholars may also contribute to particular IILS activities under an external collaboration contract.
- The availability of office space determines the number of scholars who can be accepted at a given moment.
- Visiting scholars are responsible for obtaining the necessary passport, visa or other documents they may need to enter Switzerland.
The Institute's policy is to welcome visiting scholars with specialization in one or more of the following disciplines: economics, law, political science and sociology. They are encouraged to work on projects relevant to the current research and education activities of the Institute. Detailed information on the current research strategy on the theme can be found at:

The Institute also welcomes visiting scholars to contribute to a recently launched project on "The history of ILO ideas and their impact". Some ideas and themes to be pursued under the new project are listed in a report posted at the following address:
