Working Party on the Social Dimension of Globalization

In 1994 the Governing Body set up a Working Party on the Social Dimensions of the Liberalization of International Trade to discuss all relevant aspects of this subject. The Working Party held its first meeting in November 1994, and has met on a regular basis ever since.

The Working Party examined a wide range of aspects of economic globalization and their impact on the ILO's objectives and means of action. These can be grouped under three main themes: improving the ILO's institutional capacity; improving empirical knowledge; and the search for a general approach to, and the coordination of, external and internal activities linked to the social dimensions of globalization.

In November 1999 the Governing Body reappraised the work of the Working Party and discussed its future. In March 2000 it changed the title to Working Party on the Social Dimension of Globalization and decided that the range of problems that it discussed would continue to extend beyond the liberalization of trade.

In March 2004 the Working Party discussed the report of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization.
