Ms Elizabeth Tinoco Acevedo (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela) was appointed Regional Director of the ILO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Lima, at the Assistant Director-General level, with effect from 1 February 2011. Born in 1953, Ms Tinoco Acevedo graduated from the Central University of Venezuela and the Simón Bolívar University in Caracas, with diplomas in sociology and a master’s degree in political science. She has published two books on the political history of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and a number of articles in the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional, and specialized publications issued by the National Electoral Council. Ms Tinoco Acevedo has held the positions of Director of the ILO’s Sectoral Activities Department at ILO headquarters (2006–10), Senior Relations Specialist and Desk Officer for the Americas in the Bureau for Workers’ Activities at ILO headquarters (2000–06), Senior Specialist in the Multidisciplinary Team in the ILO Office in San José, Costa Rica (1997–99), and Workers’ Education and Training Specialist in the Bureau for Workers’ Activities at ILO headquarters (1991–96). She joined the ILO in 1991. Prior to joining the ILO, Ms Tinoco held the positions of Researcher in the Venezuelan National Council of Culture, Senior Researcher at the Romulo Betancourt Foundation, and then of National Coordinator for Education in the Presidential Commission of Public Administration and Planning (CORDIPLAN). Ms Tinoco was, for 13 years, professor of political history and socio-cultural history and research methodologies at the Central University of Venezuela. She held the position of Coordinator of the School of Art at the Central University of Venezuela.
