In 2009 the ILO and its members celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Organization's formation in 1919. To mark this milestone, special events are being held in more than 120 countries under the banner of "90 years working for social justice".
These events are as diverse as photo exhibits, cultural performances, grassroots workshops and high-level tripartite discussions. Partners around the world will hold ceremonies commemorating the development and marking present day ratifications of international labour standards. Some countries will launch new Decent Work Country Programmes, while others will publish commemorative volumes and stamp editions.
Organized by country and regional ILO offices, and documented and reported here, these activities bring together tripartite constituents - governments, workers and employers - as well as NGOs, the general public, parliamentarians and academics. They serve two main purposes: to highlight tangible impact of the work of the ILO within national and regional contexts, and to create a forum for focus and discussion the role of the ILO in tackling key contemporary issues.
