Belgium hosts tripartite conference, highlighting Decent work as "important theme for Belgian EU Presidency", and "decent work as key for addressing financial, economic crisis"

Date 26-30 APril 2009
Where Brussels, Belgium

Belgium hosted a tripartite conference entitled "Influence of the ILO: a Belgian Academic contribution to the ILO 90". (L'Influence de l'Organisation internationale du Travail une contribution académique belge au 90ème anniversaire de l'Institution / De invloed van de Internationale Arbeidsorganisatie een belgische academische bijdrage aan de 90e verjaardag van de intelling) The conference was organised by the SPF Emploi Travail concertation sociale (Ministère du Travail) and ABRT (Association belge pour le droit du travail).

The Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue, Madame Joelle Milquet, highlighted during her remarks the central role of ILO for responding to the financial and economic crisis, for humanising globalisation and for strengthening global governance.

The Minister announced that implementing decent work should constitute an important theme for the Belgian EU Presidency during the second half of 2010. She indicated that she will cooperate on this with other future EU Presidencies and with EU institutions.

Other participants expressed the opinion that decent work constitutes the key for addressing the financial and economic crisis, both in the North and in the South. They also underlined that ILO influence has increased in recent times but economic and financial international and regional institutions should strengthen their operational cooperation with ILO.

Belgium will also organize on 14 May a second event related to the 90th ILO anniversary with an international conference on domestic workers. The outcome will feed into the Belgian response towards the preparation of the 2010 ILC discussion on a new instrument for domestic workers.
