High Level Conference: "90 years of the International Labour Organization" (90 jahre Internationale Arbeitsorganisation) During the tripartite commemoration of the ILO's 90th anniversary, Dr. Heinz Fischer, President of the Republic of Austria, stressed the importance of social partnership and the role of the ILO in pursuing social justice. The Minister of Social Affairs, Labour and Consumer Protection Rudolf Hundstorfer, stated Austria's support for the important milestones that are the Global Jobs Pact and the recognition of ILO as a partner in the G-20 process. Presented during the event, "Austria's Decent Work Country Profile" is the first such study to be published, in an effort to systematically track progress in achieving decent work for all by ILO's Member States.

Nordic Folk High School donates a magnolia tree on the occasion of the ILO's 90th Anniversary
Young students from a Swedish and Danish Nordic Folk High School ceremony planted a tree in the garden of the ILO's headquarters in Geneva accompanied by singing. The Scandanavian Fok High School tradition originated in the early 1800s in Denmark. The tradition builds on knowledge based on dialogue, debate and discussion which finds resonance in the ILO's founding tradition of social dialogue.

Finnish President Tarja Halonen hails the Global Jobs Pact
In commemorating the ILO's 90th anniversary, President Tarja Halonen focussed on the jobs crisis and globalization in the current global economic situation. The occasion brought together key decision-makers from government with Chairpersons of the Employers and Workers Organizations and of the Parliamentary Committee on Social and Labour Affairs. ILO Deputy Director Kari Tapiola gave the keynote speech concentrating on the June ILO International Labour Conference and its Jobs Summit.

France and the ILO: 90 Years of Common History (Colloquium held at the Palais du Luxembourg) / La France et l'OIT : 90 ans d'histoire commune (Colloque au Palais du Luxembourg)
The ILO Office in France has organized, under the auspices of the Minister of Labour, Social Relations, the Family, Solidarity and of the City, and the President of the Senate, a colloquium in Paris to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the ILO. The colloquium grouped together parliamentarians, representatives from developing countries and the private sector to focus on ILO's work in Africa in partnering with France.

Marking the 90th anniversary of the ILO, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in Berlin hosts Tripartite conference, "The Social Dimension of Globalization: Germany and the ILO Past and Present"
Germany's Minister of Labour gave the keynote address, underlining ILO relevance in the present economic crisis, emphasizing the ILO's Decent Work Agenda as a prerequisite for economically and socially sustainable development and highlighting the Global Jobs Pact proposed by the ILO. Presentations by the chair of the German trade union federation Michael Sommer and the director for International Social Policy at the Employers Federation, Renate Hornung-Draus will also focus on the ILO's role in shaping the social dimension of globalization. Historians will highlight the significant relationship between Germany, one of the pioneers of the social state, and the ILO over the decades.

Irish Taoiseach and Dublin's Lord Mayor attend official publication launch of: Edward Phelan and the ILO: The Life and Views of an international Social Actor
These memoirs detail the life and influence of Edward Phelan, ILO Director from 1941-1948, who is credited with developing the concept of tripartism, the cornerstone of the ILO. The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, T.D. highlighted Phelan's commitment to social justice as "an inspiration to us all as we seek to chart our way through these turbulent and uncertain times". Patricia O'Donovan, ILO Excecutive Director for Management and Administration, spoke of Phelan's lifelong commitment to the ideals and values of the ILO and the role they have played in Ireland's economic and social development.
In addition to the Taoiseach and the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Eibhlin Byrne, participants included the former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, T.D., was present, the former Minister for Finance and former leader of the Labour Party, Mr. Ruairi Quinn, T.D., the Chairperson of the Labour Court and members of the Labour Relations Commission as well as representatives of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the Irish Business and Employers' Confederation and the Ministry of Labour.

ILO: 90 years working for social justice organized in partnership with the ILO International Training Centre in Turin and CNEL (National Council for the Economy and Labour) The conference, which was opened with a message from H.E. Mr. Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic, featured the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization. The Declaration was translated into Italian and available at the conference. It is also posted on the Internet. About 100 people attended the conference.

Launch of Kyrgyzstyn billboards in honour of ILO 90th Anniversary
Colourful billboards appeared throughout the Chui Prospect, central street in Bishkek, where all key government offices are located. Thousands of people see these colourful posters every day. This initiative is also an example of the UN inter-agency collaboration at the country level, in particular within the UN Communication Group.

The ceremony involving several UN agencies highlighted the 20th anniversary of the Convention for the Rights of the Child, the 15th anniversary of the International Conference for Population Development, the 30th anniversary of the Convention for Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the 90th anniversary of the International Labour Organization (90 years working for social justice)

University of Leiden and Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment lead seminar on ILO's role in new socioeconomic order
The seminar organized on the occasion of ILO's 90th anniversary by Dr. Paul v.d. Heyden, dean of the University of Leiden and chairman of the ILO committee on the freedom of association raised awareness about the ILO and its relevance for the Netherlands with a broader Dutch public. Amongst issues covered were the effect of ILO standards on economic performance, the issue of migration and the role of multilateral organisations during the financial crisis and for the new economic order. The Minister of Labour stressed ILO's relevance in the Dutch context.

Conference "ILO today and in the future" organized by the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions
"ILO today and in the future" laid out ILO work, its position within the United Nations system and priorities for the Organization. The Conference, initiated by the regional level of the trade union confederation, included Mr. Jonas Gahr Stoere, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ms. Trine Lise Sundnes, Worker Member of ILO's Governing Body.

Launch of Moscow Metro Billboards in honour of ILO's 90th Anniversary
Colourful billboards appeared throughout the central metro stations in Moscow as part of the ILO 90th anniversary campaign. As the main mode of public transport in the Russian capital, the metro carries about 8.5 million passengers each working day and up to 4 million passengers on weekends. The anniversary billboards were displayed in the metro for one month, inviting millions of its passengers to join the ILO 90th anniversary celebration.

Russian trade unions mark ILO 90th anniversary
The ILO 90th anniversary was the first item on the agenda of the FITUR General Council meeting held in Moscow on 22 April 2009. Mikhail Shmakov, Chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia (FITUR) made a report entitled "ILO 90th anniversary: ILO Conventions and Recommendations and their impact on social and labour relations in Russia".

ILO 90 Conference at St. Petersburg Trade Union University
As part of the national ILO 90 campaign, the St. Petersburg Humanitarian Trade Union University organized a conference with university management, professors, students and post-graduates focusing on ILO’s role in promoting a fair globalization. Students’ questions were focused on the challenges of the economic crisis and on issues linked to globalization.

ILO Room inaugurated at the Academy of Labour and Social Relations
The Academy which celebrated its own 90th anniversary on 26 March formally opened an ILO Study Room by inviting ILO officials and distinguished guests to become students and sit at the desks (see photo). The ILO room is equipped with computers and internet access. It also has a rich collection of ILO publications given the Academy's history of actively promoting ILO values.

Conference: "Decent Work and achieving the Millennium Development Goals"
On occasion of the ILO 90 th Anniversary and with the General Union of Workers (UGT) collaboration, the ILO Office in Spain held a Conference in Valladolid which highlighted the promotion of 'decent work' to achieve social justice. The event received the support of the Castile and Leon Governments, Secretary General of UGT in the region and the various universities, political parties, trade unions, companies, cooperatives and other organizations and civil society representatives.

Conference/Workshop about the new needs of the Maritime Sector
The ILO Office in Spain organized with the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESC), the General Secretariat of Mar, IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) and the Basque Government a workshop, called: "New maritime training needs fishery and minimum crew". Mr. Juan Hunt, the Director of the ILO Office in Spain, dedicated his speech to highlighting ILO activities in the fisheries sector, which started in 1920, only a year after the ILO's foundation. The International Fair of the shipbuilding industry, maritime and port Sinaval Eurofishing 2009 took place in the Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC) and it welcomed the latest developments in the shipbuilding industry and fishing, gathering 330 signatures from 23 countries.

International Day for Safety and Health on occasion of the ILO 90th Anniversary
The ILO and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health at Work, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in collaboration with unions and employers' organizations held a tripartite event to mark the International Day for Safety and Health. 350 guests attended the event. Participants includend the Secretary of the State for Social Security, D. Octavio Granado, the Technical General Secretary of the Ministry of Manpower and Immigration, D. Esteban Rodriguez Vera, various representatives of the General Union of Workers (UGT) and Workers' Commissions (CC.OO), the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprise (CEPYME).

ILO 90th Anniversary Campaign Against Child Labour
The ILO SCREAM Programme (Supporting Children's Rights through Education, the Arts and the Media ) and the ILO Office in Spain have used the coinciding ILO 90th Anniversary and the 10th Anniversary of Convention 182 (about the worst forms of child labour) to keep a focus on the elimination of Child Labour. The World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June included a cultural event in Maria Guerrero Theater in Madrid, featuring many young people from different schools. The Executive Vice President of Telefonica Foundation, Javier Nadal; Coordinator, Programme of SM Foundation, José María González; President of the Cinema academy, Eduardo Campoy; General Secretary of CEOE, José María Lacasa and the ILO Director in Spain, Juan Hunt, took part in the event as well.

Red Card against Child Labour! Football with Real Madrid
Thousands of children from the Real Madrid Integration School raised a red card against child labour, as a symbolic act, on occasion of ILO's 90th Anniversary. The children's families also participated during the final match played in the Real Madrid Integration School.

Stolen Childhood, Documentary Exhibition against Child Labour
The Documentary Exhibition, Stolen Childhood, featured the five-time award-winning film, El Camino by Ishtar Yasin . After the screening, Ishtar Yasin lauded ILO support against child labour and highlighted the importance of cinema in generating international awareness of child labour.

High-Level Commemoration of ILO's 90th Anniversary and Global Jobs Pact
The Office in Spain celebrated the ILO 90 Anniversary with a High-Level event chaired by the ILO Executive Director of the Office of the Director-General, Ms. María Angélica Ducci. The occasion signalled an upcoming tripartite proposal to strengthen and achieve social justice through the Decent Work and the Global Jobs Pact. At the event, Ms. Ducci also confirmed that the ILO will participate in the G20 Summit in September in New York, to continue to contribute its experience in tackling the economic and jobs crisis.

National Lottery of Spain on occasion of the ILO 90th Anniversary
The National Lottery in Spain is a massive activity managed for the Government. The economic benefits are always dedicated to social issues in the country. On 26 September the lottery tickets were dedicated to the ILO 90th Anniversary. The 90th Anniversary Logotype and the ILO sentence "A better world starts here" was enclosed in the Lottery Ticket which will likely be in thousands of pockets in Spain.

Occupational Safety and Health Day celebrations took place at the ILO Headquarters
On April 28th the closing day of the 90th Anniversary week, events took place around the world in support of the World Day for Safety and Health Work. At the ILO Headquarters in Geneva, a panel discussion, film projection and photo exhibit event marked the day. Across the world workers, employers, governments and leading occupational safety and health activists came together to accentuate the necessity of safe and healthy work. Through billboards, marches, musical and theatrical events and high level gatherings, the importance of workers' health and safety was dynamically reaffirmed.

ILO Annual Run/Walk Charity event in conjunction with the ILO's 90th
In conjunction with the ILO's 90th Anniversary celebrations, the Sports and Leisure Association of the ILO, with the support of the Staff Union, held its annual combined run and walk charity event on Friday 15 May. The funds from this year's proceeds will go to support the work of HandiSports, a Geneva-based association dedicated to promoting and expanding sports opportunities for disabled people.

Symposium: "The Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining in the 21st Century". Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Convention 98
The ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) and the Workers’ group celebrated the anniversary of a Convention which establishes both the right of a trade union to exist and collective bargaining. The Symposium examined recent trends and developments in collective bargaining, the protection of the right to organize and the relationship between collective bargaining and the social and economic objectives of Decent Work. The identified policies and strategies to strengthen the capacity of trade unions to organize and to bargain collectively and achieve the universal application of these rights.

Tajikistan

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Tajikistan officially launched a Child Labour Monitoring Unit on occasion of ILO 90th Anniversary - (pdf 10kB)
The Ministry selected the ILO anniversary for the opening ceremony of this Unit to highlight combatting child labour. The Unit will focus on monitoring, identifying and removing girls and boys from the worst forms of child labour in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe. Its staff will regularly check the places where girls and boys may work in order to identify child labourers and determine risks to which they are exposed. They will also refer these children to services, verify that they have been removed, and track them afterwards to ensure that they have satisfactory alternatives to child labour.

ILO Anniversary provides context for national workshop in Tajikistan
A national workshop on the “Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Tajik Migrant Workers and Presentation of ILO Global Report on Forced Labour” was conducted by the ILO in close cooperation with the Tajik Ministry of Labour and Social Protection within the framework of the ILO’s project “Community Development through Employment Creation and improved Migration Management project in Tajikistan” financed by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security.

Seminar with the trade union confederation TURK-IS and University of Sakarya. The President of TURK-IS, the Rector a.i. and ILO-Ankara Director delivered speeches on the history of the ILO and the importance of decent work. There was also a panel discussion with academics of the university about different aspects of decent work.

Symposium: "The Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Declaration and Working Life in Turkey"
The University of Ankara, Faculty of Political Science, and the ILO are celebrating their anniversaries together, 150 and 90 years respectively. The Symposium focussed on the ILO's 8 fundamental conventions which are covered in its Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998). Prof. Dr. Mesut Gülmez, gave the keynote address on ILO's history as a human rights institution. Panels featured presidents of all social partner organizations as well as the Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and prominent academics.

UK tripartite event highlighted continuing relevance of ILO upon its 90th anniversary and calls knowledge base and research its "crown jewels"
The tripartite celebration of the ILO's 90th Anniversary also included NGO and academic representatives. Minister Jonathon Shaw congratulated the ILO on the speed and vigour of its response to the current Crisis. This sentiment was echoed by Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the TUC and John Cridland, Deputy Director of the CBI, who also referred to the ILO's knowledge base and research as its "crown jewels". Mr. Barber concluded that the ILO had never been more needed than at this time of Crisis. A Panel of Experts also spoke to the ILO's 'thought leadership' and the need to integrate ILO policies into Poverty Reduction Strategies.

Tripartite Roundtable on occasion of the ILO 90th Anniversary and the World Occupational Safety and Health day in Uzbekistan The roundtable centred on the implementation of a new law regarding occupational accidents and diseases insurance. The combined commemorative day strengthened close cooperation between the ILO and Uzbekistan and facilitated labour legislation in an important area.
