On 12 March, a national conference on industrial relations was organized by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) and the ILO Office in Vietnam with the sponsorship from the Royal Norwegian Embassy, with participation from national level tripartite social partners and eleven provinces. The partners represented government (MOLISA, DOLISA), the labour union (VGCL), and employer organizations (VCCI, VCA). International participants included UN agencies, various NGOs and some representatives from embassies in Hanoi.
Vice Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hoa said he hoped the conference would "enunciate and add momentum to the growing national consensus on the important role of Industrial Relations in Viet Nam in view of achieving both globally competitive economic progress and social progress".
During the conference, Mr. William Salter, ILO Sub-regional Director presented a keynote address reporting on the recent ILO international meeting on the Global Economic Crisis, where it was emphasized that Tripartism and Social Dialogue are good business decisions in today’s economic climate. This was followed by a Tripartite Responding Panel of high level officials from MOLISA, VGCL, VCCI and VCA.
Mr. John Hendra, UN Resident Coordinator stated that the United Nations Team in Vietnam is pleased to support the capacity development of Vietnamese partners to address new challenges amid the global crisis and its social implications.
Ms. Rie Vejs-Kjeldgaard, Director of ILO Office in Viet Nam, mentioned that the conference is also an opportunity for several successful companies to share their best industrial relations practices to show concrete examples of Social Dialogue and Collective Bargaining in action in Vietnam. Questions and comments from a Tripartite Responding Panel will further examine how IR supports the "human side" of economic development.
