      ACFTU/ILO-ACTRAV High level national seminar on Decent Work & union strategy in the global crisis
    • 22 April 2009, Beijing, China
      Beijing holds high-level tripartite event entitled "Tackling the impact of the global crisis on employment, promoting decent work".
      Highlighted by a video address from Director General Juan Somavia, and opened by keynote addresses by China's Minister of Human Resources & Social Security, leaders from the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) and the China Enterprises Confederation (CEC), presented both a historical review of the ILO's work in China, and some future perspectives for cooperation between the ILO and China. A photo exhibit at the venue displayed images of women and men at work in the country. Over 130 representatives from the ILO's tripartite partners in China, social partners, embassies, other UN agencies, and international organisations attended the event.

      Symposium on Social Justice and Child Labour
      As part of the ILO 90 celebrations, a symposium on Social Justice and Child Labour was held in Suva. The symposium aimed to create an awareness of the efforts of the ILO and partners in working for social justice and its impact on child labour. Topics of "Social Justice and Child Labour" were addressed by high level speakers from the ILO and its constituents, development partners and other relevant United Nations agencies. Seminars were given on 'ILO activities in the Pacific to stop child labour', 'Good practices on tackling child labour through education’ and ‘Strengthening legislation to eliminate child labour in Fiji.'

      Series of Special Broadcast Events with SmartFM Network
      Three broadcast events took place over the course of two weeks of ILO 90 celebrations in Indonesia. The first talkshow on youth entrepreneurship was conducted on 16 April, in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. The second talkshow on the impact of the financial crisis to Indonesian migrant workers was conducted on 22 April, in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. The third talkshow on child trafficking was conducted on 28 April, in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

      ILO Special Tripartite Futsal Anniversary Tournament
      10 teams participated in the tournament, including 3 trade union confederations, the Indonesian employers' organisation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration. The official kickoff of the event was done by the President of the Confederation of All-Indonesian Trade Unions and ILO Director for Indonesia, with about 200 people in attendance.

      Kiribati celebrates the ILO 90th
      Attending guests included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Cabinet Ministers, Secretaries of Ministries, Staff of UN Joint Presence Office, Australian & New Zealand High Commission Staff, Kiribati Employers Organization and the Kiribati Trade Union Congress. The Minister for Labour, President of the Employers Organization and President of the Kiribati Trade Union Congress made speeches on the contribution and activities of the ILO in Kiribati. Edward Bernard the National Programme/Technical Officer for the Youth Employment Programme gave a speech on behalf of the ILO. The constituents highlighted the celebration with the cutting of the ILO 90 cake and the launching of the ILO 90 Kiribati song, composed by the Youth Wing of the Kiribati Trade Union Congress.

      Malaysia celebrates ILO 90 with tripartite conference on "Health and Life at Work: A Basic Human Right"
      Celebration of ILO 90 in Malaysia was organized and hosted by The Ministry of Human Resources in conjunction with the OSH World Day, 28 April 2009, at Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) under a theme of "Health and Life at Work: A Basic Human Right". There were about 700 participants comprising workers, employers, Ministry of Human Resources. Ministry of Human Resources arranged one booth to display ILO publications and showed the ILO 90 video messages of both the ILO Director-General and ASEAN Secretary-General, as well as the video of ILO history. A significant moment of this event was the presentation of the "Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan for Malaysia 2015" which was launched formally on May 2.

      Workshop hosted by Employers Federation on Decent Work, Economic Crisis
      The Mongolian Employers’ Federation (MONEF) organized a half day tripartite workshop on "Decent Work and World Economic Crisis" to exchange ideas amongst the constituents on how to cope with the impact of the world economic crisis on the workplace.

      ILO's tripartite members, industry and NGOs meet on subject of Occupational Safety and Health in Mining
      A National Tripartite Consultative Meeting on Occupational Safety and Health in Mining was held on the occasion of the ILO's 90th Anniversary month. ILO social partners and representatives from non-government organizations, mining companies, as well as the State Specialized Inspection Authority participated in the meeting and discussed the necessity of the application and the possibility of the ratification of the ILO's Convention No. 176 on Occupational Safety and Health.

      ILO 90 Press Conference brings together tripartite leaders, ILO officials on the subject of Social Dialogue and cooperation
      An anniversary press conference was held to bring media attention to the role and projects of the ILO in Mongolia. Ms. Constance Thomas, ILO Director for China and Mongolia was joined by Mr. Nyamkhuu, Vice Minister of the Mongolian Ministry of Social Welfare & Labour (MSWL), Mr. Ganbaatar, Executive Director of the Mongolian Employers’ Federation (MONEF), and Mr. Kh. Amgalanbaatar of the Confederation of Mongolian Trade Unions (CMTU). They discussed the cooperation between the ILO and the tripartite constituents. All partners agreed to strengthen tripartite dialogue and cooperation.

      Regional Tripartite Workshop held on subject of Improving Safety and Health in Mining in 7 Countries
      Hosted by the Mongolian government, this event brought together tripartite partners from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Viet Nam, India and the Philippines to discuss the importance of ILO Convention 176, Convention 155 and Recommendation 187.

      Fine Arts and Photo Exhibit held to mark ILO 90, and to mark the 10th Anniversary of Mongolia's signing of the ILO Convention Concerning the Worst Forms of Child Labour
      ILO/IPEC organized an exhibition of fine arts and photos “Colours and Black and White” to mark the ILO 90th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the ILO Convention No. 182 concerning the worst forms of child labour. The exhibition was inspired by Mongolian fine artists and photographers. It aimed to help understand and express the struggle facing Mongolia’s child labourers.

      World Day for Safety and Health at Work marked with press conference to raise awareness
      The Confederation of Mongolian Trade Unions (CMTU), the Mongolian Ministry of Social Welfare and Labour (MSWL) and the Mongolian Employers' Federation (MONEF), organized a press conference to highlight the importance of social dialogue and cooperation amongst the tripartite constituents to promote decent work and minimise fatal accidents, injuries, and illnesses caused by poor working conditions.

      Symposium. 90 years of the ILO: the significance for Australia and New Zealand
      The Symposium is organised by the Business and Labour History Group of the New Zealand & Labour Market Institute, Auckland University of Technology in association with the Auckland Labour History Group. AUT University is calling for papers on the following topics: What has been the significance of the ILO for Australia and New Zealand?, What influence have Australia and New Zealand had on the ILO?, What does the future hold for interaction of the ILO with Australia & New Zealand?. The abstracts of 300 words should be submitted to nzwalmi@aut.ac.nz by the 15th of September and papers accepted will be presented at the symposium. After refereeing of the full written papers, they will be published in a special issue of the NZ Journal of Employment Relations in June 2010.

      National Tripartite Celebration of the 90th Anniversary and launch of the campaign to promote the Social Justice Declaration organised by the Ministry of Labour and the ILO Office in Pakistan
      Statements were made by the ILO Country Director, Mr Donglin Li, the Acting UN Resident Coordinator, Dr Khalif Bile, the Head of Operations of the Delegation of the European Community, Mr Frank Hess, General Secretary of the Pakistan Workers' Federation, Br Khurshid Ahmed, the President of the Employers' Federation of Pakistan, Mr Ashraf Tabani, the Secretary for Labour & Manpower, Mr Malik Asif Hayat, with an address by the Chief Guest, the Hon. Federal Minister for Labour & Manpower Syed Khurshed Ahmed Shah. The celebrations were attended by more than 150 guests from the government, workers' and employers' organisations, the diplomatic corps, UN agencies, civil society and the media. After his Address the Hon. Minister joined social partners and other guests and "signed up for promoting decent work for all", adding his signature to the event's Decent Work banner.

      Presidential proclamation No. 1754 was signed last Tuesday, expressing the president's view that the Philippines "wishes to enhance its commitment to pursue the ideals and principles of the ILO."

      Prime Minister of Samoa and ILO Director - ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries to launch ILO 90th Anniversary Stamp
      In celebration of 90 years working for social justice, Samoan Prime Minister H.E. Sailele Malielegaoi Tuilaepa and ILO Director - ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries, Werner Blenk are to release a commemorative stamp. The launch will take place on 27 April, at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum in Vailima, Apia, in the presence of representatives of Government and Workers' and Employers' Organizations.

      Tripartite constituents join to sign Samoa Decent Work Country Programme
      Samoa DWCP was signed by tripartite constituents, with the Deputy Prime Minister signing for the Government, President of the Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Samoa signing for Employers and the President of the Samoa Public Service Association signing for Workers. The signing was a central part of ILO90 celebrations in Samoa which included a high level panel discussion on social justice and globalization. This provided a forum for constituents and partners to voice their concerns and views in the context of the economic crisis. The events enjoyed high level participation, including major donors such as the NZ, Australia and the US. This event also marked OSH Day with a parallel programme.

      Diverse Audience gathers to mark ILO 90 in Honiara, celebrate conclusion of Decent Work Country Program Consultations
      Government, Business, NGOs, Diplomatic community, UN staff and the Social Partners of the ILO joined in Honiara to discuss Social Dialogues on Decent Work for a Fair Globalization. Using the occasion of this anniversary to bring focus to the pressing concerns facing people today, Solomon Islands Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr. Francis Billy Hilly spoke of the important challenges such as righting global social imbalance and stopping a local job crisis. He said that while the ILO has worked long and hard with its constituents on the Solomon Islands to promote labour standards and training, focus now needs to be on creating jobs. "Rights at work are not much use if people have no job", he said.

      "The media/ public relations workshop will engage with the media on dimensions of social dialogue, decent work in Sri Lanka and globally, and the ILO's 90 years in operation. One of the objectives is to link social partners with the media.

      Launch of the National Framework on Social Dialogue for employers and employees.
      The framework will be used as a tool to promote social dialogue in the workplace. The workshop will include presentations by the MLR&MP, Employers’ Organizations, Workers’ Organizations, ILO Workers Activities Bureau (ACTRAV), ILO Employers Activities Bureau (ACTEMP) and an ILO specialist on Social Dialogue and Labour Administration, ILO-SRO, New Delhi.

      High-level event on Social Dialogue on Decent Work for a Fair Globalization, ILO 90th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony
      President of Sri Lanka, H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa gave the keynote address at the High-level event on Social Dialogue on Decent Work for a Fair Globalization, ILO 90th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony, organized by Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower. This event included the announcement of the ratification of several ILO conventions, including the Maritime Labour Convention (C186),Seafarers' Identity Documents Convention (C185) and the Occupational Safety and Health Convention (C155). An announcement on the ratifications was read aloud by the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower, Mr. Mahinda Madihahewa. The announcment was then handed over to the President by the Minister of Labour Relations and Manpower, Hon. Athauda Seneviratne. National Decent Work Awards were given in the categories of Employer and Employer/Employee Organizations. Tokens of appreciation for commitment to the world of work were given to HE the President, the Minster of Labour Relations and Manpower and the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower.

      Bangkok marks ILO 90 with event co-sponsored by the ILO and the Ministry of Labour, Royal Thai Government, bringing together over 300 Thai and international participants from Government, Workers’ and Employers’ organizations.
      Featuring a keynote address from Mr. Phaithoon Kaeothong, Minister of Labour, Royal Thai Government, this event brought together over 300 Thai and international participants to hear a presentation of the Thailand Decent Work Country Programme and presentations from the Ministry of Labour, the Employers’ Confederation of Thailand, the Labour Congress of Thailand and the Employees’ Labour Development Council of Thailand.
