Date 21 APril 2009
Where Buenos Aires, Argentina

On the occasion of a tripartite seminar entitled "Social Dialogue for Decent Work" in Buenos Aires, representatives of government and employers' and workers' organizations met to discuss the importance of social dialogue in the context of the international financial crisis and its significance for the labour market.

During her address, H. E. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced that she will formally request that the ILO be included in future G20 discussions dealing with the current Financial and Economic Crisis. She said she hopes to obtain support from other countries, particularly from Brazil for this proposition. "The World Bank, the IMF and the UN are in the G20," she said, "but there is one leg missing: that of employers and workers...it is work that generates wealth, not the other way around."

During his remarks, ILO Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean said "the current economic situation shows how the actions of a few have finished with the jobs of many...we are living through a crisis. And the ILO faces it by stating...that the objective of Decent Work is as valid today is it ever was before".

H. E. President Kirchner was presented with a commemorative clock by ILO Regional Director Jean Maninat, as were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Labour.
