Press release | 14 December 2012
Ms. Veronika Stromsiková of the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic in Geneva and Mr. Jürgen Schwettmann, Director of Partnerships and Development Coooperation at the ILO, today signed an agreement to contribute financing to the ILO project on the return of migrants and home country socio-economic development in the Republic of Moldova.

The project addresses the links between return migration and the economic progress of sending countries, an issue of major importance to countries like Moldova, which face very high levels of migration outflow of their labour force with its inevitable impact on demographic and economic development. Return migrants hence have a key role to play, even where their return is temporary, since they bring back skills, as well as financial and social capital.

The research elements of the project will provide empirical evidence and analysis of return migration trends, in order to better understand patterns of return migration and to develop profiles of the migrants themselves. This in turn is intended to lead to the design of measures and incentives to encourage the sustainable and successful reintegration of return migrants into labour markets.

Moldova was admitted to the World Trade Organization in 2005, and is currently a candidate country for admission to the European Union.
