Climate change and environmental degradation pose significant challenges to economies and societies today, with risks likely to increase significantly in the future.
Without appropriate responses, the devastating impact of climate change will directly affect people and their communities exacerbating already complex challenges of unemployment, poor social protection systems, and human vulnerabilities.
This will compromise governments’ ability to provide for their citizens and prevent them from reaching many of the recently adopted sustainable development goals (SDGs).
In the world’s most significant call to action on climate change, the Paris Agreement highlighted, in particular, “the imperative of a just transition of the workforce and the creation of decent work and quality jobs in accordance with nationally defined development priorities”.
This event brings together experts who will discuss the range of policies and initiatives that can assist in the greening of economies and show what needs to be done to enhance our ability to manage natural resources sustainably, increase energy efficiency and reduce waste.
These experts will explore the challenges during the transition in addressing inequalities and enhancing resilience through the creation of decent jobs, skills upgrading, promotion of social justice and the eradication of poverty.
