ILO – Employers' Federation of India (EFI) Consultative Workshop with Employers from Automobile sector in Pune: Voluntary Code of Practice for Engagement of Contract Labour

To discuss the draft voluntary code of practice by formal enterprises in respect of engagement of contract labour.

The ILO “Way out of Informality” sub-regional project is working with the automobile sector in Pune to promote formalisation of enterprises and lowering of the decent work deficit for workers. To that end, the project is supporting a number of local interventions. Through the process of implementing this work, the need for a voluntary code for enterprises on engagement of contract labour has been put taken up as a possible area of focus.

As the use of contract labour in the automobile industry continues to grow, so does the need to limit possible exploitation. An initiative such as a voluntary code of practice would be in line with the proposed actions outlined in Recommendation 204 on the transition from informal to formal economy adopted by the International Labour Conference in June, 2015.

In order to discuss the proposed draft voluntary code for employers on contract labour, a Consultative Workshop on “Voluntary Code of Practice for engagement of Contract Labour” with employers from automobile and related sectors in Pune has been organized for 25 February 2016. The meeting will be held at the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries & Agriculture from 09:30 hrs to 14:10 hrs.

The objectives of the workshop are as follows.

1)            Taking stock of issues in engagement of Contract Labour by enterprises.

2)            Discussions on the draft voluntary code.

3)            Way forward on finalisation and adoption of the Voluntary Code.
