Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Measuring the Informal Economy

Subregional workshop to facilitate sharing of experiences and best practices between the statistical offices of India, Nepal and Bangladesh together with the representatives of the Ministries of Labour of the 3 countries.

The growing informal economy comprises more than three-quarters of all non-agricultural employment in South Asia with large decent work deficits. Major challenges in addressing the deficits are lack of reliable data and baseline information to allow policy-makers to design appropriate responses. The workshop will focus on information-sharing on frameworks used for capturing informality in the three counties; discussions on definitions of informal employment, data sources and proxy measurements and present the latest ILO manual on data collection in the informal economy, with a view to identification of areas for future collaboration.
