Knowledge sharing workshop on debt bondage in India

A joint meeting between stakeholders to join forces, share knowledge, work together more coherently, and to stimulate complementary action from and between different actors now seems to be a logic next step to determine the way forward in fighting debt bondage.

The ILO in India has been working on the issue of family indebtedness since 2000. More recently, the focus is on improving working conditions and reducing vulnerability to bondage through promotion of Decent Work in close collaboration with State government as well as trade unions and employer’s organization in sectors prone to bonded labour. The objectives of the workshop are:
- increased knowledge base of bonded labour (theory and practice)
- linking academic research to micro level community interventions and macro level policy-making
- inputs on review of Bonded Labour (System) Abolition Act 1976 and centrally sponsored bonded labour rehabilitation scheme.
