The ILO works with the unions in a number of areas to strengthen their capacity. It works with workers ‘constituents in sync with the ILO structures for promotion of social justice and decent work. Magnus Berge, Specialist on Workers Activities, says the main issue when it comes to addressing workers is the right to unionize and the right to collective bargaining. Berge says that there is a need to formalize the large informal economy of India -- currently engaging almost 93% of workers. The unions thus can play a critical and an empowering role with the formalization of the economy to ensure decent and productive work for all.
