Judges play a very important role in ensuring the rule of law and it is therefore important for judges to understand the different sources of international labour labour law and how they can be applied. To strengthen the knowledge of 15 judges from the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation, the ILO organised a tailor-made training, during which they were introduced to how the ILO develops and supervises international labour standards and the different ways in which these standards can be used to resolve disputes in domestic courts. Specific issues discussed included freedom of association, anti-union discrimination, and the right to strike, using both international and national examples.

The training, a first for the Russian Federation, was moderated by Lejo Sibbel, Sr. Specialist on International Labour Standards and Labour Law of the ILO DWT/CO Moscow, and organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation.
