MDG Fund Joint Programme on Ensuring Food Security and Nutrition for Children 0-24 months old in the Philippines

The ILO, in collaboration with other UN partner agencies, promote maternity protection in the work place. This Joint Programme, with support from the Government of Spain through MDG achievement Fund, seeks to promote the advocacy and interventions that will create enabling environment and encourage women workers and nursing mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding in the formal and informal workplaces in the (3) Joint Programmes cities - Naga City, Iloilo City and Zamboanga City.

When: 4 January 2010 - 31 December 2012
Donor: Government of Spain

The Philippines lags behind its Asian neighbours in terms of high infant and child mortality rates. Reducing malnutrition among young children and reducing their mortality rate are national priorities.

Funded by the Government of Spain through the MDG Achievement Fund, ILO with UN agency partners, supports creation of an enabling environment in which communities support breastfeeding and complementary feeding. Through a food security project, the ILO engages national stakeholders including employers’ organizations, workers’ organizations and women’s organizations to promote the rights of breastfeeding mothers and workers with family responsibilities in formal and informal workplaces. Programme activities based in Naga City, Iloilo City and Zamboanga City follow frameworks laid out in the ILO Workers with Family Responsibilities Convention (No. 156) and the ILO Maternity Protection Convention (No. 183).
