Araw ng Kasambahay (National Domestic Workers Day)
This year's "Araw ng Kasambahay" carried the theme: "Kilalanin ang halaga ng mga kasambahay Batas Kasambahay, agad na ipasa!" (Recognize the value of domestic workers, Pass the domestic workers bill now!). It was marked by a national celebration in the National Capital Region (NCR) and simultaneous events in key cities like Batangas, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo and Davao. In the regions, there was a week-long celebration highlighted by media guestings, multisectoral dialogues, distribution of advocacy materials and provision of services to kasambahays.
The regional celebrations were marked by creative presentations from among the domestic workers and youth advocates. Local government officials and social partners attended and gave inspirational and solidarity messages to inspire the domestic workers.
In all areas, some 1,500 domestic workers registered in the Social Security System. Some 385 availed medical and dental missions provided by health groups and paramedics. Some 1,340 were counseled by Social Workers and religious groups, 867 participated in skills demonstrations by TESDA, some 50 availed of the jobs fair conducted by POEA. Some 18 domestic workers were also provided legal assistance by lawyer's groups in the regions from the Office of Counselor in Bacolod City.
