Crafting of an Environmental and Social Safeguard Management Plan

The local government and partners from South Upi crafted an environmental and social safeguard management plan as part of the construction and improvement of water system under the ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project have partnered with the local government of South Upi, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the Timanan Central Elementary School (TCES), and the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MOLE). Under the partnership, the project will construct and improve water supply in the school. The project will benefit not only the teachers and students through access to safe water but also nearby communities. The project will also train and engage local communities to develop, build, operate and maintain water and sanitation facilities.

Partners have crafted an environmental and social safeguard management plan. This was part of the capacity building, supervision, and monitoring of the level II water system improvement and construction. Under the plan, project partners have identified issues and problems. Together, they have also developed actions and assigned focal persons and deadlines to ensure proper implementation.

Partners from South Upi agree on specific actions and deadlines to ensure that environmental and social safeguards are in place.
Water source, testing activities, pipeline, workers, social protection such as Social Security System (SSS) and the PhilHealth, the community, tap stands, operation and maintenance, sustainability of watersheds, waste management, differences among stakeholders, first aid and safety officers were among the issues identified. Specific actions and deadlines were agreed to ensure that environmental and social safeguards are in place. This is part of the construction and improvement of water system in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) under the project.
