World Day against Child Labour

Generation Safe and Healthy Children’s Summit

The ILO Caring Gold Project, funded by the United States Department of Labor, will bring the World Day against Child Labour in Camarines Norte to address child labour and to promote decent work, including occupational safety and health in small-scale gold mines. Over 250 children, parents and partners will join the campaign and children’s summit.

Children in child labour from small-scale gold mines in Camarines Norte will share their dreams and challenges in a children’s summit to mark the World Day against Child Labour in the Philippines. The summit, based on the theme Generation Safe and Healthy (Ligtas sa Paggawa, Malusog na Batang Malaya), will be held on 29 to 30 May 2018.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) implements the CARING Gold Mining Project funded by the United States Department of Labor (US DOL). ILO works with BAN Toxics to address child labour and poor working conditions in artisanal and small-scale gold mines. The ILO also supports the Strategic Helpdesks for Information, Education, Livelihood and other Developmental Interventions (SHIELD) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development focusing on areas with high incidence of child labour to make services more accessible to children and their families.

BAN Toxics will facilitate a session on performing arts and theatre with children in child labour, while DSWD will lead the story writing and visual arts. The DSWD Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino or its conditional cash transfer programme will conduct a family development session with miners and parents of children in child labour.

The children will present their dreams, stories and challenges to the local government of Camarines Norte led by Governor Jonah Pimentel. Mayor Joseph Ascutia of Labo, Mayor Lourdes Briguerra of Paracale and Mayor Ricarte Padilla of Jose Panganiban will join the children’s summit and World Day against Child Labour campaign. There will be a commitment setting with parents, miners, financiers and the local government.

The World Day against Child Labour is held every 12 June. The ILO CARING Gold Mining Project, however, together with the DOLE, DSWD and BAN Toxics recognize the importance of involving children, parents and communities directly affected by the issue of child labour.

This year, the World Day against Child Labour (WDACL) and the World Day for Safety and Health at Work (SafeDay) have joined forces to highlight the global need to improve the safety and health of young workers and end child labour through the #GenerationSafeandHealthy joint campaign. This joint campaign aims to accelerate action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In the Philippines, the ILO implements the CARING Gold Mining Project and the Building a Generation of Safe and Healthy Workers of SafeYouth@Work both funded by the United States Department of Labor (US DOL).
