National Consultation Workshop to Reduce Child Labour and to Improve Working Conditions in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining

Over 50 representatives from government agencies, employers and workers organizations and national coalitions joined a consultation workshop to reduce child labour and to improve working conditions in artisanal and small-scale gold mining.

The Convening stakeholders to develop and implement strategies to reduce child labour and improve working conditions in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (COSTREC-ASGM) Project, with the support of the United States Department of Labor (USDOL), gathered stakeholders in a national consultation workshop.

Over 50 representatives from government agencies, employers and workers organizations and national coalition on artisanal and small-scale gold mining joined the consultation workshop, which was part of the inception phase of the COSTREC-ASGM project.

National stakeholders provided inputs to further refine project strategies and activities. The consultation workshop also served as an opportunity to orient them on key features of the project and to provide updates on the situation in artisanal and small-scale gold mining.

Formulation of plans to pursue convergence-based initiatives was among the key outputs of the consultation workshop. Mr Khalid Hassan, Director of the ILO Country Office for the Philippines, acknowledged the collective effort to free children from the dangers of small-scale mines and to build a better and sustainable artisanal and small-scale gold mining industry.
