Culminating Event on Building Resiliency and Strengthening Partnerships: Livelihoods at the Forefront of Recovery After Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) - Northern Cebu

The International Labour Organization (ILO), together with the implementing partners in Northern Cebu, held a project culminating event entitled “Building Resiliency and Strengthening Partnerships: Livelihood at the Forefront of Recovery After Haiyan” on 15 October 2015 in San Remigio. The event featured the project results and interventions reaching out to almost 7,000 workers and 35,000 family members who were affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).

The culminating event gathered partners and stakeholders and was hosted by the Municipality of San Remegio. Partners from the local government, regional government agencies, humanitarian and non-government organizations, employers and workers organizations, and community-based organizations also discussed key lessons and challenges in building back better through decent work and sustainable livelihood after the disaster.

The highlight of the event was the signing of a commitment by key partners to continue to promote decent work principles in livelihood and enterprise development in Northern Cebu. Among the signatories were representatives from the Province of Cebu, the Municipality of San Remegio, Barangay Kawit (Medellin), Philippine Business Social Progress (PBSP), St Jude Samboan Foundation, Bidlisiw Foundation, Southern Partners of Fair Trade, Inc., Mag-uugmad Foundation, Damgo sa Kaugmaon, Bogo Livelihoood and Technical Skills (LiTeS) Center,
community-based beneficiaries from Barangay Luyang (San Remegio) and the Municipality of Madredijos.

Completed sub-projects were also ceremonially turned over and toolkits were distributed to partners. Local products produced under livelihood and enterprise development, including interlocking compressed earth blocks (ICEB), moringa and turmeric products, pickled papaya and dried fruits were also exhibited.

The Governments of Japan, Norway and the International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC) supported the ILO Haiyan response in Northern Cebu.

 

 Ms Grace Diaz (Department of Labor and Employment-Provincial Director of Cebu), assisted by Mr Baltz Tribunalo (Head of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Province of Cebu), turn over toolkits to beneficiaries from the municipalities of Tabuelan and Tabogon during the culminating event.
