In the Philippines, reports indicate that cases have been significantly increasing since 2000. From a classification of “low and slow”, the situation has since been described by government as “hidden and growing”. That is why the ILO is committed to working closely with its constituents and partners to help avert the spread of HIV/AIDS especially in the workplace.

  5. Cost-Benefit Analysis of HIV Programs Prevention Programs for Filipino Seafarers 2010 - 2015

    The Philippines is the world largest supplier of seafarers, contributing approximately 20 per cent of the seafarers in the international maritime sector. According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) 267,000 Filipino seafarers were deployed by international maritime industry in 2007. The number of HIV infected Filipino seafarers is increasing. They are a potential route of transmitting the epidemic to the general population in the Philippines. Therefore there is a need for concentrated prevention efforts in the maritime sector. Cost-benefit analyses of the current and potential HIV prevention interventions targeting the seafarers and their spouses were carried out in order to facilitate decision-making and program planning.

  6. Climate change in Jabonga, Philippines - the water is already rising

    Gingging Poyo cuddles her baby after a day’s work. The 31-year-old mother is part of the maintenance staff of a lake resort in Jabonga. “I grew up in this place so I decided to settle here with my family,” she says. Jabonga, a town in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines, seems to have many natural advantages to offer a young family: a view of mountains, rock formations, underwater caves, waterfalls, diving sites and a fresh water lake. However, changing weather trends in Jabonga are affecting many residents, including Gingging and her family.
