Workshop on Infrastructure Development for Employment Creation and Social Safety Nets

The primary objective of the workshop was to help the Government formulate policy on employment generation and public investment. The workshop shared regional and national experiences of employment intensive public works programmes, discussed ILO research findings of "Karnali Employment Programme", and recommended strategies for the future employment programmes through infrastrucrtue development. The workshop was co-organized by ILO Kathmandu, National Planning Commission and World Bank.

In recognition of the need for economic peace building in the post-armed conflict context, Nepal has been taking keen interest in promoting employment creation and social safety nets by means of infrastructure development. A national workshop was jointly organized by ILO, World Bank (WB) and National Planning Commission (NPC) on 22 October 2009 in exchanging regional and national experiences of employment intensive public works including that of Karnali Employment Program and recommend strategies to the Government of Nepal for future national level employment program through infrastructure development.
