Press release of the Ministry of Finance (MoF)- ILO provides a grant assistance of US$3 million to the Government of Nepal.

The Government of Nepal and the International Labour Organization (ILO) signed the implementation agreement in Kathmandu today for the "Employment for Peace Building through Local Economic Development" (EmPLED) project. The three-year, US$3 Million (NRs.194.7 million) intervention funded by the Netherlands Government targets employment creation in Dhanusha and Ramechhap Districts. The primary target beneficiaries include youth, women and disadvantaged and marginalized groups.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has agreed to provide a grant assistance of US$3.00 Million (equivalent to about Rs. 194.7 million) to the Government of Nepal for the implementation of Employment Promotion and Peace Building Based on Local Economic Development (EmPLED) Project. An agreement to this effect was signed between the Government of Nepal and the ILO at the Ministry of Finance today.

The objective of the project is to contribute to national peace building and poverty reduction in Nepal. The project will be implemented in Ramechhap and Dhanusha districts, and with a limited extent in Mahottari and Siraha districts as well. The duration of the project will be 3 years. It is expected that capacity of the local stakeholders in planning and implementing local economic development programs would be enhanced in the program districts at the end of the project. Likewise, women and men in the targeted communities would be effectively engaged in and benefit from improved access to productive local employment and economic development opportunities.

Mr Krishna Gyawali, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Mr Shengjie Li, Director, ILO/Nepal, signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Nepal and the ILO, respectively.

The Government of Nepal expresses its sincere appreciation to the ILO for the assistance and continued support in the socio economic development of Nepal.
